Colombian/American designer, Edwing D’Angelo, titled his newest spring/summer 2017 collection “To Palenque With Love: An Affair of Passion”, which is inspired by his most recent trip to Cartagena, Columbia. This visit is where he learned the story of San Basilio de Palenque, which is the first free black town in the Americas founded by black people. Today, UNICEF declares it a World Humanity Immaterial Heritage.
Edwing utilized a yellow, green, grey, and blue color scheme throughout his collection, which all carry significance as they come from the natural surroundings of the Cartagena region, particularly the sky, sea, and landscape of the town. The high temperatures inspired him to create loose silhouettes, open shirts and jumpsuits, and various short pants, which allow one to feel comfortable and chic while traveling to tropical areas. The fabrics used are breathable while maintaining a slim fit and the cuts and details are in line with Edwing’s native aesthetic, giving us a tropical Columbian perception.
